Singing

The work of story and the work of song are both rooted in the voice.

I grew up as a singer, and left a degree in vocal performance feeling like my voice was broken. A wise teacher told me, “I hope someday you find yourself somewhere in the world, singing around a fire and you remember what made you love singing in the first place.”

What I thought was an ending became the beginning of a journey of reclamation. I did find myself singing around many fires, remembering the gift of our voices and the joy of singing with presence rather than perfection.

Years later, I discovered the work of Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI), a practice inspired by Bobby McFerrin, Dave Worm, and my teacher, Briony Greenhill.

Today, I offer classes and workshops in Fairfield, Iowa and around the country, bringing this spontaneous, inclusive, and deeply playful practice to singers of all skill levels. Recent workshops have been offered in Denver, CO, Longmont CO, and Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Missouri.

About CVI

Collaborative Vocal Improvisation is the art of creating music in the moment, together. Through simple frameworks and deep listening, each voice has a place within the whole.

Here is a great video from Briony Greenhill about CVI

In my workshops, I weave somatic awareness practices to help participants feel safe and embodied, structured frameworks to bring voices into collaboration, and gentle guidance to support each singer’s creative unfolding.
